I figured that they should know, and they did, or at least they offered a Framework to help me start my journey:<br><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.coe.int\/en\/web\/education\/competences-for-democratic-culture\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/www.coe.int\/en\/web\/education\/competences-for-democratic-culture<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The EU Council\u2019s competence model includes&nbsp;<strong>20 competences<\/strong>, in four groups:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Values, Attitudes, Skills, and Knowledge &amp; Critical Understanding.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What exactly are \u201ccompetences\u201d then? According to this model, the term \u201ccompetence\u201d \u201c<em>refers to the psychological resources (such as attitudes, skills and knowledge) that need to be mobilised and deployed to meet the demands and challenges of democratic and intercultural situations<\/em>\u201c. An individual is deemed to be acting competently when \u201c<em>he or she meets the demands, challenges and opportunities that are presented by democratic and intercultural situations appropriately and effectively by mobilising and deploying some or all of these 20 competences<\/em>\u201c.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Democracy seems to provide two types of situations that pose these challenges and demands or offer opportunities:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>democratic situations, and intercultural situations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When discussing VALUES later in the text, citizens in a democracy are expected to agree on the \u2018<em>general belief that other cultural affiliations, cultural variability and diversity, and pluralism of perspectives, views and practices&nbsp;ought to be positively regarded,&nbsp;appreciated and cherished<\/em>, assuming that<em>&nbsp;cultural diversity is an asset for society<\/em>;\u2026\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hm. If diversity is an asset for society, there should be benefits, and people need to have competences to enjoy those? So, in my humble opinion, the term \u2018democratic competences\u2019 could describe \u201c<em>\u2026the psychological resources (such as attitudes, skills and knowledge) that need to be mobilised and deployed to meet the demands, challenges &amp; opportunities and enjoy the benefits of democratic and intercultural situations.<\/em>\u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cool.
